Easier access to data without programming to be involved and not take weeks to get it. Any end user can access without IT assistance. Better tools, to know who is on my network and spot devices that are trying to get on especially via wireless that are not allowed– easy. I want better tools to link up other applications together–there are some out there but still weak and not easy. Access my information everywhere and not cost me an arm . Disaster recovery tools.

It is all about choosing the right software–many organizations’ have older software and never want to upgrade or streamline their systems. It is the role of IT to convince the organization to continually improve and upgrade.
Have an ERP system that has tools to access the data across many platforms.
CRM that can integrate into any software application.
Access your information anywhere and securely. Review data points that will affect the business and be able to identify them easy and fast to relay to management (Report writing). Business tools that can write software applications to feed information and collect or gather information without the need of a team of programmers.
Despite the advancement in technology and availability of easy technology solutions, there isn't a day when we can say 'all is fine.' There are several pain points within the enterprise for which solutions do not exist yet.
Big data is increasingly becoming a huge issue. Nowhere to place our data and allow it to continue to grow at the rate it needs to grow at. Cost of storing and DR of this data. Accessing this data with the speed that is necessary to mine and report on this major mountain of information
The ever rising costs, of software applications and the need to maintain them with yearly maintenance fees. It is better to have staff to write my own code and applications.
It goes back to accessing the data faster so key team members have the data to make important business decisions when they need it and have the data alert them if it changes and needs attention. I am all about auto alerts so that team members can address the information as it is happening and not a day or two later or sometimes even weeks later.
Role of a CIO
My role is a revenue source that feeds ideas with cost savings attached to it.
We are a “Maintenance” “Ideas” “Implementation” “Training” “Facilitator” “Fact Finding” “Data Miners” “Analysts” “Psychologists” “Mind readers” all wrapped up in the IT department
My company PSI is an engine manufacturer and harness dressing company – we have production lines that work from work instructions for each task and process. The IT department spearheaded/developed/installed a new process for processing work instructions on the line and capturing data at each junction and also capture time studies to evaluate and alert production managers of slowdown or quality issues on the line in real time. We produced a production line that barely was able to get 50 engines processed to now processing 120 plus engines. 125percent increase of manufacturing output. The IT department is in the very fabric down to each string of how we run the business. We are expected to know the impact of each process and new improvement and intersect all the pieces of data so they work together and can be read and processed in real time.
No the CIO needs to be the leader and director of such activities so it does not hamper the organization to the extent it is damaging in the opposite direction. There is a fine line when it comes to secure and assess ability
Advice to CIOs
Harbor a team of IT staff that will share and grow together – no secretive weirdo IT people allowed! Cut those team members out quickly so the cancer does not spread. It is better for them and you! Have a proper DR plan in place and practice that procedure quarterly
